The Situation
HIP Home Service is a plumbing company working Wesley Chapel and the surrounding Pasco and Hillsborough markets. Emergency plumbing is the purest form of high-intent local search there is: someone has water coming through a ceiling, they have their phone in one hand and a bucket in the other, and they are going to call whoever appears first and looks credible.
They will not read your About page. They will not compare three quotes. Whoever appears in the map pack, loads instantly, and has a visible tap-to-call button wins the job.
HIP was not in the map pack. That was the whole problem.
What we found in the audit
- Not ranking in the map pack for any emergency plumbing term in any market they served.
- Google Business Profile primary category set to "Contractor" rather than "Plumber."
- Phone number rendered as an image, not a tap-to-call link — so an emergency caller had to memorize it, leave the site, and type it in.
- Site loaded in 5.8 seconds on mobile. For emergency intent, that is fatal.
- One page for the entire service area. No individual city pages for Wesley Chapel, Land O' Lakes, Lutz, or anywhere else.
- Only fourteen Google reviews, with no system for generating more.
What We Built
Emergency-intent architecture
Everything was rebuilt around the person with the bucket. Tap-to-call above the fold on every page, at thumb height. A visible "24/7 Emergency" band. Service pages for each emergency scenario — burst pipe, water heater failure, sewer backup, no hot water — because those are the actual searches.
Speed as an emergency requirement
Mobile load from 5.8 seconds to 0.9. For emergency plumbing this is not a nice-to-have — a customer standing in an inch of water is not waiting six seconds for your hero image to render. They are hitting back and calling the next result.
City pages that are actually local
Individual pages for Wesley Chapel, Land O' Lakes, Lutz, and the rest of the service radius. Real content — the age of the housing stock in each area, the specific plumbing problems that go with it, the neighborhoods, the ZIP codes. Not find-and-replace pages.
Google Business Profile rebuild
Primary category corrected to "Plumber." Every service listed individually rather than three generic ones. Full attribute set. Photo uploads on a weekly cadence. Q&A seeded with the questions people actually ask at 2am. Weekly posts.
Review engine
A systematic request at the moment of peak satisfaction — job complete, water no longer coming through the ceiling, customer visibly relieved. Direct link, one tap. Review count went from 14 to over 90 in eight months, accumulating steadily rather than in a suspicious burst.
Google Ads for the gap
SEO takes months. Ads run while it builds. Tight geo-targeting on the actual service radius, aggressive negative keywords stripping out DIY and salary searches, and dedicated landing pages matching each emergency scenario. Cost per lead dropped 41% against their previous account.
The Results
Top three in the map pack across the core service areas. Booked jobs up 184%. Cost per lead down 41%. Mobile load 0.9 seconds.
The review engine turned out to be the compounding piece — the map pack position that reviews unlocked now produces leads at effectively zero marginal cost.
What Transfers to Your Business
If your business serves emergency intent, speed and tap-to-call are not design details. They are the product. A beautiful site that loads in six seconds loses to an ugly one that loads in one, every single time, because the customer is not evaluating your design — they are solving an emergency.
