The Situation
Marcio Cruz BJJ is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu academy in Tampa run by a genuinely elite black belt. The instruction was not the problem. The problem was that the website was doing nothing to convert the specific, unusual anxiety of a person who has decided they want to try jiu-jitsu and is now terrified of walking into the gym.
That anxiety is the entire conversion problem in martial arts, and almost no academy website addresses it. The prospect is not comparing your credentials against another academy's credentials. They are trying to figure out whether they will be humiliated on day one.
What we found in the audit
- Class schedule was a PDF. On mobile, it opened in a separate viewer, rendered at unreadable size, and required pinch-zooming.
- Free trial existed but was mentioned once, in body text, halfway down the home page.
- No answer anywhere to the questions every beginner actually has: what do I wear, will I get hurt, will I be the only new person, do I need to be in shape first.
- Ranking on page two for "BJJ Tampa" behind two academies with substantially weaker instruction.
- Photos were almost entirely competition footage — advanced practitioners at black-belt level, which is precisely the imagery that makes a nervous beginner close the tab.
What We Built
A funnel built around beginner fear
The entire home page was restructured around one conversion: book a free trial class. Not "learn more," not "view schedule." Book the trial.
Above the fold: what the free trial actually is, what happens when you arrive, what to wear, and a single button. The trial offer now appears in the nav, the hero, mid-page, and the footer.
Content that answers the real question
A dedicated "Your First Class" page addressing every beginner anxiety directly and without condescension. What to wear if you do not own a gi. Whether you need to be fit first (no). Whether you will get hurt (here is how we actually run beginner classes). Whether everyone else will be an expert (here is the beginner program).
This page is now one of the highest-converting pages on the site. Nobody in the local market had written it, because everyone was busy writing about their instructor's competition record — which matters enormously to advanced practitioners and not at all to the beginner writing the check.
Photography strategy
We swapped the competition footage for images of beginner classes. Regular people, in ordinary shape, learning. The single most effective conversion change on the entire project, and it cost nothing but a decision.
Live schedule
The PDF is gone. The schedule is a real, responsive, filterable component. Beginners can filter to beginner-only classes and immediately see there are six a week.
Local SEO
Google Business Profile rebuilt with the correct primary category ("Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club," not "Gym" — a fifteen-second change that most academies never make). Neighborhood content targeting the areas the academy actually draws from. A systematic review request process at the moment students earn a new stripe.
The Results
Free trial signups up 3.4x. Number one for "BJJ Tampa" and ranking across the associated variants. Organic traffic up 178%. Mobile load 0.8 seconds.
The beginner program now runs a waitlist, which is a genuinely different business problem from the one the academy started with.
What Transfers to Your Business
Your prospect's actual anxiety is almost never the thing your marketing addresses. Academies market their credentials; beginners are worried about embarrassment. Find the real fear and answer it plainly — that page will usually outperform everything else on your site.
